EuroLat, the other Spanish European summit held in Madrid

Legislators from Europe and Latin America will hold a dialogue in Madrid, starting tomorrow, Monday, on common challenges between the two regions, in addition to analyzing the results of the recent summit of the European Union and the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) held in Brussels.

Until July 27, 150 parliamentarians – 75 European and 75 Latin American – will debate during the 15th session of the European-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (Eurolat) about challenges in issues such as security, crime, education or human rights, as well as about women and the importance of the Spanish language in the media and its publication in separate forums dedicated to these two issues.

Women’s forum

The European Parliament office in Spain reports that the forum on women will be held on the 25th, and the meeting with civil society in Latin America on the Spanish language the next day.

The plenary session of the EuroLat Assembly will take place on Thursday 27, during which the reports and recommendations prepared by the various committees and working groups that make up EuroLat on Tuesday 25 will be discussed and voted upon.

The Assembly is expected to conclude with a speech by the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs. Jose Manuel Albares.

It is scheduled during the meeting to elect a Panamanian Beloved Cerode AcevedoPresident Barlasen, as the new co-chair of the Latin American component of the association, replacing Colombian Perez.

The two EURLAT co-chairs took part in the EU-CELAC summit on July 17-18 in Brussels, the first to be held since 2015, to which they conveyed the association’s message to promote trade between the two regions, while closing pending agreements, deepening human rights and seeking an international order based on rules rather than violence.

Freedom of the press

In their letter to the leaders of the summit, the parliamentarians also called for the organization of meetings between the leaders to strengthen the strategic link between the two blocs, and stressed the “essential role” of freedom of the press while calling for action in the face of the “alarming deterioration” of the conditions of the LGTBIQ community and against xenophobia.

They also reminded the EU and CELAC governments of the importance of strengthening the legal and institutional capacity of legislatures and the judiciary to effectively combat impunity, in order to promote good democracies.

EuroLat was born in 2006 as the parliamentary successor to the Bi-regional Strategic Association and meets in plenary session once a year, the last time in April 2022 in Buenos Aires.
