First leg of the second round of the UEFA Women's Champions League: Real defeat and draw with Arsenal - Ajax | UEFA Women's Champions League

First leg of the second round of the UEFA Women’s Champions League: Real defeat and draw with Arsenal – Ajax | UEFA Women’s Champions League

The second round of the Women’s Champions League began with four home and away matches on Tuesday and the remaining eight on Wednesday, with the group stage already set.

Three of last season’s quarter-finalists played on Tuesday. Bayern Munich beat Real Sociedad 0-1, which at its European debut attracted 11,479 spectators, a record for any match before the final stage of the competition. But Arsenal drew 2-2 at home against Ajax, who eliminated four-time champions Frankfurt in the first round.

Juventus, who reached the quarter-finals like Bayern and Arsenal last season, drew (1-1) over HB Køge between two teams who were in the group stage last year. Benfica won 2–3 on their visit to Rangers, who passed the first round.

The 15 teams that qualified from the first round will join the clubs starting at this stage. The return matches will be played next Wednesday and Thursday.

Who is in the group stage?

The reigning champions and champions of the three highest-ranked associations (France, Germany and England). As Lyon is the defending champion and also the French champion, the fourth federation champion (Spain) also enters the group stage, which means Barcelona joins Lyon, Wolfsburg and Chelsea.

Lyon (France, champion)
Wolfsburg (Germany)
Chelsea (England)
Barcelona (Spain)

They will be joined by 12 second-round winners, seven of whom come from the Champions Stream (for domestic champions) and the other five from the League Stream (for teams that enter after finishing second or third in the League).

The draw for the group stage will be broadcast live on Monday 3 October at 13:00 CET.
