Washington (AFP) – Cinema icon George Clooney and Irish rock group U2 are among a select group of artists to receive honors from the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday, Washington’s most prestigious cultural award, in the presence of United States President Joe Biden.

A number of Hollywood stars and politicians from across Washington will also celebrate the careers of soul singer Gladys Knight, Cuban-born bandleader and songwriter Tania Leon, and gospel singer Amy Grant, during this evening.

Biden and his wife Jill, as well as Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Douglas Emhoff, must attend this prestigious evening in the large cultural center of the American capital, which former President Donald Trump is not very popular in the world of American culture, and he avoided him throughout his term of office.

Clooney, 61, and his wife, Amal, a human rights lawyer, have been especially anticipated this year on the red carpet.

The Academy Award-winning actor and star of films such as Ocean’s Eleven, as well as the director and producer of several films, said he was honored to receive this honor from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

“Growing up in small-town Kentucky, I never imagined I would one day be sitting on the porch of the Kennedy Center Honors,” he said in a statement. “To be mentioned alongside the rest of these fine artists is an honor.”
