New Zealand police say four people have been killed after a fishing boat sank due to strong waves caused by inclement weather.

Police say the bodies have been recovered from the sinking of a fishing boat on Sunday night, leaving one missing and five others stranded at sea.

Police said two Air Force planes and a Navy ship were involved in the search and rescue operation for the missing person.

The storm moved south and hit the city of Auckland as heavy rains closed the road on Monday morning, closing schools and shutting down ferry services.

The Center for Meteorology and Hydrology said that the arrival of six storms in the south, along with torrential downpours and damaging winds, was expected in the afternoon and residents were advised to stay indoors.
