New Delhi, February 28 (EFE). – Since last week, India has evacuated more than 1,000 Ukrainian nationals, after Monday a plane from the local airline Air India arrived in New Delhi with more than 200 Indian students who fled the conflict in that country.

The flight, which was carrying 259 students who crossed the border from Ukraine into neighboring Romania, “landed in New Delhi at 06:40 local time (1:10 GMT),” an Air India spokesperson told Effie, who asked not to be identified.

“Operation Ganges”, in which India has undertaken the task of rescuing more than 20,000 Indians residing in Ukraine, has reached five flights and more than a thousand citizens have returned, since the first plane landed in Bombay last Tuesday, when Russia invaded the country. Not yet started.

A flight carrying 240 more students is also scheduled to arrive from Hungary on Monday, Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar reported on Twitter.

After the conflict began and Ukrainian airspace was closed last Thursday, flights were forced to leave from neighboring countries to Ukraine, such as Hungary or Romania, where most of the Indian nationals have fled.

According to local media reports, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, held a high-level meeting on the crisis on Monday, in which it was decided that four ministers would travel to neighboring countries to organize rescue operations on the ground.

The Indian Embassy in Ukraine today on Twitter urged Indian students who are still in Ukraine to “go to the railway station for a trip to the western regions” of the country.

In addition, it issued a statement yesterday asserting that it is “constantly exploring and working” to open the borders of other neighboring countries so that Indian nationals can relocate to them, as well as Hungary and Romania.

India remains neutral in the conflict, after again yesterday abstaining from a vote in the UN Security Council to convene an emergency special session on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Previously, the Asian country also refrained from condemning the actions of Russia, which New Delhi considers a strategic ally in terms of defense and military equipment, and declared that the focus of the Asian country is to ensure the security of its citizens.
