TOKYO, June 28 (Princea Latina) Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi announced today that he will travel to Manila this week as Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s special envoy to attend the inauguration of Philippine President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The head of Japanese diplomacy told a press conference that he will make a three-day visit to the Southeast Asian country, during which he will meet with dignitaries of the new administration.
“We intend to further strengthen our relations with the Philippines, which is an important strategic partner in the region,” he stressed.
He also stressed that Tokyo will further enhance joint cooperation for the realization of the “free and open” Indo-Pacific region.
Last April, the first “two + two” talks between Japan and the Philippines were held.
On the occasion, the Foreign and Defense Ministers agreed to discuss future mutual visits, as well as the exchange of supplies and services between the Japan Self-Defense Forces and the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
The two sides also agreed to enhance mutual assistance in the areas of maritime security, strengthening communication, human resource development, anti-piracy, counter-terrorism, preventing violent extremism, cyber security and economic security.
The bilateral agenda dealt with other issues such as the promotion of nuclear disarmament, the non-proliferation regime and the fiftieth anniversary of ASEAN-Japan relations.
Kyodo News reported that Hayashi will be the first Japanese foreign minister to attend a Philippine presidential inauguration since 2004.
The official ceremony will be held on June 30 at the National Museum in Manila.
