Judge questions chief suspect in Haiti’s murder

Sanon’s appearance on Monday was his first since his arrest in July 2021, shortly after the crime and accusations that he was one of the main organizers of the plot, which involved twenty former Colombian soldiers.

Sanon, who has lived for several years in the United States, presents himself as a physician and Christian pastor who provides “leadership to Haiti through a life of affirmative action and absolute integrity.”

In 2011, he launched a political rally and criticized the corruption of the Haitian elites and the international community’s control of the country, in addition to affirming his desire to embody the alternative for the needs of the population.

The doctor returned to Haiti in June, a month before the assassination, on a private plane accompanied by Colombian security forces.

According to the investigation, the initial mission was to kidnap Moyes and force him into exile, but shortly before the date the goal changed.

Moyes was killed by 12 shots at his home in Bellerin 5, an affluent area of the capital, and without the intervention of security guards, while the assailants identified themselves as members of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA, for its acronym in English).

Voltaire, for his part, is the fifth judge investigating the case and recently requested an extension of the investigation by admitting that he was unable to conclude the investigation.

At least 40 suspects, including 18 Colombians, are being held in the national prison, but no charges have been brought so far.

Jovenel Moise was the fifth president to be assassinated in the Caribbean nation since its independence in 1804, and his death adds to the already long list of high-profile crimes still to be solved in Haiti.
