Ecuador’s president, Guillermo Lasso, is close to facing a political trial after the release of audio recordings and new documents confirming his coverage of corruption and drug trafficking investigations.

Assemblywoman Viviana Feloz, of the Unión por la Esperanza (UNES) office, reports that they have completed the drafting of the document to demand political prosecution of the president and among the arguments is his inaction for illegal actions of which he became aware.

According to the legislator, on March 22, 2022, the former director of the public company Flota Petrolera Ecuadoriana (Flopec) Johnny Estupinian sent a letter to the head of state to warn of acts of corruption in this public company.

In the document, Estupinan denounced that Hernan Luque Lecaro, who led the board of directors of the Public Companies Coordination Company, created a scheme to illegally use the oil company’s resources, the legislator denounced.

After this revelation, the President issued a statement denying that he had ordered the closure of this investigation and stating that he had requested the dismissal of two generals involved in the ranks of the National Police.

In this context, the Speaker of the National Assembly (Parliament) spoke in favor of starting the dismissal procedures and stressed that this is not a “coup” because it is within the legal framework and the constitution.
