LeBron prioritizes fitness, not scoring for the season with the Lakers

Los Angeles (AFP) – Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James said on Monday that staying injury-free will be his priority as he prepares for his 20th NBA season, in which he could break Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record.

The 37-year-old heads into the next campaign determined to lead the Lakers back to the playoffs after a dismal 2021-22 season as franchise hopes were dashed by a combination of injuries and poor form.

LeBron, who only made 56 appearances last season, told reporters his goal would be to stay fit this season.

“Just being available, that’s the most important thing,” LeBron said. “Obviously, some injuries that you can’t control, that’s my way of thinking. For me, as one of the captains of the team, availability is the most important thing in this league: being on the ground.”

LeBron moved up to second in the NBA regular season points standings in March, passing Karl Mallon during a game against the Washington Wizards.

Now the basketball star enters the 2022-2023 season by 1,325 points behind the all-time leader in points, Abdul-Jabbar, which means if he maintains his average score per game, the record should drop this season.

It’s not an obsession

LeBron has made it clear, however, that he’s not obsessed with breaking the record for Abdul-Jabbar, a Lakers legend.

“The only time I ever thought about it (on the record) was when someone posted something on my social media and I was looking up and seeing it,” LeBron added at the Los Angeles Lakers media day.

And every time I feel awful, it’s like, ‘Wow. “I’ve never played my career thinking about records, just making sure I’m in the best shape possible to start the season and be available. But sitting here knowing that I’m about to break the most wanted record in the NBA is great for me and that’s great” .

LeBron added, “I’m not going to put too much pressure on (the record) all season. But it’s a historic moment when I get there, and as long as my family and friends are there to see it, that’s the most important thing.”

Meanwhile, LeBron spoke warmly of new Lakers coach Darvin Hamm, the former Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach who replaced Frank Vogel last June.

LeBron, who signed a two-year contract extension with the Lakers last month, added that he remains deeply committed to the franchise he joined in 2018.

“I came here because I believe in excellence and I’m still here,” LeBron said. “It’s literally that simple.” “I’m committed to the franchise…I hope to start tomorrow.”
