Medicines, Drugs, and the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy in Iran

Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said, “A million patients can use radioactive drugs produced here and if we don’t have this technology, we will have a lot of problems in treating patients.”

Fortunately, the AEOI now has the capacity to produce radiopharmaceuticals and radiation systems, among other capabilities, for medical needs that cannot be purchased abroad due to sanctions, warned Eslami. And the head of the nuclear entity said that Iran will become, in the not too distant future, a center for the production of deuterium drugs, which are considered a very suitable alternative to chemical drugs, given their low side effects compared to the latter.

He pointed out that before this local entity could achieve such developments in the field of medicine, some patients had to travel outside the country to receive treatment, but now, thanks to the great strides that have been made in this field, it is not necessary to do so. .

The expert added that until the present time, in addition to developments, it is still necessary to provide a radioactive particle called cobalt-60 to produce a gamma knife here (Gamma Knife) with which radiosurgery is performed.

Nuclear medicine is one of the prime examples of the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and the country has made rapid progress in the field of producing therapeutic and diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals, according to what was reported online by Hispantv.

Iran currently produces more than 50 types of radiopharmaceuticals at global technological levels, which experts consider to be at the forefront of the region in this field and in nuclear medicine.
