Monica Puig Qualifies for 2024 Ironman World Cup in New Zealand – Metro Puerto Rico

With 907 athletes from 23 different countries and Puerto Rico taking part in Sunday's Ironman 70.3® Puerto Rico, 31-year-old Brazilian Mathias Martini came out on top.

Puerto Rican Javier Figueroa, who won last year's event, finished second.

Jessica Gonzalez of Puerto Rico (5:07:43) was the first Puerto Rican athlete to cross the finish line.

For her part, gold medalist Monica Puig, who retired from the tennis court two years ago and made her debut as an ambassador for IRONMAN 70.3 Puerto Rico this year, clocked a time of 5:42, which would have allowed her to qualify. The IRONMAN 70.3 2024 World Championship will be held in New Zealand in December.

The official start of the event took place at 6:55 a.m. in Laguna del Contado, where athletes swam 1.2 miles and continued to the transition area at Third Millennium Park, where the 56-mile course began. The north coast of the island leads to the municipality of West Dorado and the same route returns to the pedestrian zone to the Third Millennium Park. The stage took participants on a 13.1-mile run through Old San Juan, ending at Parque del Tercer Milenio, just west of the Escambran Battery.

First female “overall”: Beni Cross-Thompson, 53, Chilean, US resident (4:51:20)

Second Place “Overall” Female: Brenda Schaub of the Dominican Republic (4:49:07)
