Nicaragua defeats Brazil and retains the last ticket to the Classic World Championships

PANAMA CITY, Oct 5 (EFE) – Osmán Gutiérrez’s work led Nicaragua to a 3-1 victory over Brazil on Wednesday, retaining the last ticket handed out for the 2023 Baseball Classic World Cup qualifiers.

Gutiérrez (2-0) walked six runs, allowed only three hits, scored an unearned run and won the historic match, which allowed the Pinoleros to qualify for their first World Baseball Classic.

The Nicaraguan battery was also key, from the first half they punished Heitor Tocar, who eventually lost, with a pair of doubles from Cheslor Cuthbert and Dwight Brayton, to seal the first of two Central American runs.

At the bottom of the same inning, Brazil left the rules loaded.

The Brazilians, after Gutierrez pinned three zeros on them, made their first streak at the bottom of the fourth inning, when Melcar Perez made a foul that allowed Leonardo Reginato to stomp on the board.

In the seventh frame, Luis Montelto opened the game with a long double to the left and then scored by choosing a player from Elmer Reyes.

Nicaragua’s manager Sandor Guido brought in Carlos Teller, who had done the job of keeping South America at bay for 1.1 rounds and only allowed one hit.

In eighth place, Tim Lopez and Leonardo Reginato made it to the base, but loyal Joaquin Acuña was able to quell the rebellion with a double play, to maintain the supremacy on the scoreboard.

At the bottom of match nine, Acuña retired all three hits he faced to close the door to his opponent and earn a tackle.

The best hitters for the winners are: Stephen Leighton 4-3 and a single, Chesleur Cuthbert 4-1 and a double.
