In a context where sales of processed and ultra-processed products with excessive sodium content continue to grow globally, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned this week that reducing salt intake in the diet is the most cost-effective way to lower blood pressure. and deaths.

The PAHO’s call to reduce salt consumption is based on the fact that the world is far from achieving the goal of reducing sodium intake by 30 percent by 2025, a reality that the PAHO regretted through a message from the social network Twitter.

Among the measures proposed by the Pan American Health Organization to align with this health claim include reducing salt in breads, cereals, cereals, meat and dairy products; Doing so, PAHO’s message reiterates, is the only way for countries to reduce average salt intake in the population by 2025.

As an acceptable dose of consumption, the World Health Organization specifies two grams of sodium salt per day, however, statistics reveal that in the Americas the numbers range from 8.5 to 15 grams per person.

On the other hand, experts warn that reducing these parameters can prevent high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, which are recognized as the leading causes of death in America.
