TECO chief considers forests essential in tackling climate crisis

More than 20 years ago, Costa Rica realized that protecting forests, caring for water and biodiversity would benefit tourism and productive activities, and boost the national economy, Alvarado noted in his speech at the Forum on Forests and Land Use, one of the events of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26).

The Ministry of Environment and Energy noted that in 1997 it established the Environmental Services Program (PSA), which has succeeded in reversing deforestation, increasing forest cover and maintaining a mechanism for cash transfers to benefit populations in special vulnerable situations such as rural and town women. the original people.

He said that in the 1980s, conservation efforts in Costa Rica were able to halt the deforestation that prevailed in the country in previous decades and began the process of recovery until it reached a forest cover of 52.4 percent of the land in 2020.

He explained that the public service law consists of financial recognition granted by the state to owners or owners of forests and forest farms for the environmental services they provide, which directly affect the protection and improvement of the environment.

He continued that in the case of indigenous lands, a maximum share of 1,000 hectares is allowed and with a special condition two per cent of the land is allowed to be used for subsistence activities.

Official data indicate that more than 122 thousand hectares were protected by PSA between 2010-2020 in indigenous lands in Costa Rica, and 1 million 724 thousand 518 trees were planted under the activity of agroforestry systems in these places, with increasing benefit to indigenous women.
