The 2022 National Prize for Fine Arts is presented to Flora Fong

The Ministry of Culture awarded the 2022 National Prize for Fine Arts to painter Flora Fong (73 years old), one of the pioneers of Cuban visual arts.

The award jury consisted of also National Award winners Alberto Lescay, Lisbia Vint Dumoa and Nelson Domínguez, international curator José Manuel Nosedjen and visual artist Lester Amador.

Almost 20 candidates were evaluated in this year’s edition.

Lescay, chair of the jury, highlighted the bridges created by Fong towards Asian traditions, and their overlap with the Cuban component.

The award is also an appreciation for the painter’s teaching work. Flora Fung trained several generations of artists in the national education system.

The jury also highlighted the solidity and projection of his work, closely linked to the essence of Cuban culture.

She is the author of the series, Remolinos y cyclones; orbit Caribbean, Antilles and Bahia.

She is the recipient of the Award of Excellence for National Culture (1988), the Prize of the International Association of Fine Arts (1985) and the Portfolio of Studies Award from the Italian Government (1988).

Flora Fong has a unique nature painting style, with a color palette dominated by blues and yellows. In landscapes it has a mix of tropical and Asian.

He also distinguished himself in making artistic kites with an oriental technique, and his work in sculptural pieces, ceramics, stained glass windows, and fabrics.
