The death toll from the winter storm in the United States rose to 65 – Juventude Rebelde

On Tuesday, the US authorities reported that the death toll rose to 65 during the historic winter storm that ravaged most parts of the country, especially New York State, which causes more than half of the deaths, with 34.

Of the total deaths, the sources indicated that 32 cases occurred in Buffalo County, located in New York.

The authorities explained that the snowfall, which reached record levels, hampered rescue operations, although this Tuesday they began to reopen some communication routes that remained closed.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told MSNBC Morning Joe that the storm, dubbed Elliott, “was probably worse than anything this city has seen in over 50 years.”

“We’re finding a lot of people who are outside and hindering our efforts as first responders,” Buffalo Public Works Commissioner Nathan Marton told NBC.

Among the chaos wrought by the storm in four days, some 20,000 flights were reportedly canceled and some 1.7 million users were left without power.

According to the US National Weather Service, the weather will start to improve from Wednesday.

The authority revealed that the ice cover at Buffalo Niagara International Airport was about one meter and 27 centimeters.

The weather is expected to gradually improve as the week progresses. In its latest bulletin, the NWS warned that severe weather “will continue to create hazardous travel conditions locally over the next couple of days.”

“Most of the eastern United States will remain in freezing conditions through Monday before a milder trend begins early Tuesday,” it added.
