The Ecuadorean Parliament will assess the requirements for Laso’s accountability

The Ecuadorean Parliament will assess the requirements for Laso’s accountability

The President of the National Assembly (Parliament), Virgilio Sacisella, convened a virtual session of the CAL at noon on Friday to discuss whether the case against the President meets the established conditions.

If the document containing the application that could bring the end of the Lasso period is approved is approved, it will be sent to the Constitutional Court, a body that has six days to issue an opinion on admissibility.

This Thursday, after correcting the errors previously discovered, and in the midst of the questioning, legislators Viviana Feloz, Mireya Pazminho, Rodrigo Fajardo and Pedro Zapata resubmitted the official file with a request to impeach the president politically.

Other legislators, such as Johanna Moreira, of the Izquierda Democrática, have questioned the introduction of the text again, considering this measure outside the established term.

However, at their meeting today, CAL will determine what to do with the petition.

Laso reached this point after the scandal linking his son-in-law Danilo Carrera and his government officials to an alleged network of corruption in public companies and apparent ties to drug trafficking, specifically the Albanian mafia.

While the government denies the accusations and describes them as destabilizing attempts, social organizations support Lasso’s removal from power, not only for these crimes, but also for the abandonment of the state.

The various steps of the procedure can take a total of about a month and a half, and in the end, 92 votes out of 137 total members of the assembly are required to remove the president.

In this case, no new elections will take place, but the Vice President, Alfredo Borrero, will take office.
