The first quarter of 2024 was the “most violent” in Haiti – DW – 04/20/2024

The violence does not stop in Haiti and the first quarter of 2024 was the country's bloodiest since 2022, when the worst crime and crime wave in recent years began, as revealed on Friday (19/04/2024).

In total, more than 2,500 violent deaths or serious injuries caused by criminal gangs – representing a 53% increase compared to the most violent quarter, which was the immediately preceding quarter (October-December 2023) – were recorded. On Friday, UN Secretariat spokesman Stephane Dujarric quoted figures from the UN mission in the Caribbean country (BINUH).

Most of the crimes were recorded in the capital, Port-au-Prince. Data from the United Nations Integrated Office indicate that there is an “alarming level” of violence against girls and boys, in addition to sexual violence practiced by armed gangs that control the capital’s neighborhoods.

The Caribbean nation is mired in a serious crisis of violence caused, among other things, by a lack of institutions, following the assassination in 2021 of President Jovenel Moise – who has yet to be replaced – and the recent resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

After several weeks of negotiations, on April 12, a transitional council was formed charged with organizing the holding of elections and forming a new government. Meanwhile, the country is awaiting an international police mission for which several governments have already offered agents, which Kenya will lead, but which has been delayed due to a lack of funding to pay for such a deployment.
