The Senate approves Lula’s proposals for the Supreme Court and the Attorney General’s Office in Brazil

Now Dino will become a Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), as his nomination was approved in the Senate by a vote of 47 to 31 against.

The 55-year-old head of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and a senator replaces Minister Rosa Maria Weber, who left her post in September after turning 75, the minimum age for STF members.

Between 2015 and 2023, the new Supreme Court justice was governor of the state of Maranhão (northeast of the country) and previously served as a federal judge.

The nomination of Cuneit (62 years old) to the Office of Public Prosecutor was also approved by a majority of 65 votes to 11, with one abstention. Until now, he held the position of deputy election lawyer.

Earlier, the Senate Constitution and Justice Committee confirmed Lula’s appointment on Wednesday.

After a nearly 10-hour call on Saturday (concerns and questions), Dino’s nomination passed at that meeting by 17 votes to 10. Jeunet had a more comfortable result: 23 to four.

Hours before the two proposals proposed by the President, the Senate voted on indications from other authorities. These discussions began yesterday and are on hold today, Wednesday.

Lula’s appointees issued favorable opinions on 6 December. There was no discussion after the reports were read at the International Court of Justice.

After the Senate of the Legislature approves both names, it will be up to the STF and PGR to determine the history of the property.
