The organization confirmed several meetings of the Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, with Lebanese interlocutors to warn about the context of the matter.
Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the Secretary-General (Antonio Guterres), said in a press conference that the representative called on the parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any action or statement that could further aggravate tensions.
At the same time, he stressed the need to ensure the protection of civilians.
“Since October, we have seen so many lives lost, families displaced and neighborhoods destroyed.
“The risk of a wider fire outbreak is very real,” the spokesman said during a press conference.
The United Nations also confirmed that its peacekeeping forces in Lebanon remain on the ground, with a mandate to carry out operational activities and work at all levels to reduce tensions.
Since October 7, the Blue Line separating Lebanon and Israel has also become a scene of confrontation, displacing residents on both sides of it.
The border, guarded by the UN’s Blue Helmets, was established by the organization on June 7, 2000 to determine whether Israel had withdrawn from Lebanon.
Since then, an unofficial border has divided Lebanon and Israel, while UN Security Council Resolution 1701 demands a complete cessation of hostilities, and the departure of Israeli and Lebanese forces from both sides.
