The procedure consists of changing the firearms registry and listing the groups by parts that allow the weapon to be assembled in half an hour, because these weapons lack the serial number and are therefore not traceable.

Depending on the rule to be approved, according to the White House, kit manufacturers will have to submit to the same regulations as those for firearms, and said kits must have serial numbers that allow weapons to be identified.

In addition, those who purchase these weapons will have to undergo the same background check that those who obtain conventional weapons go through.

Those who market weapons previously manufactured in this way will also be required to register them with a serial number.

According to White House data, in the past year alone, there were nearly 20,000 potential “stealth weapons” involved in criminal investigations.

According to Justice data, between 2016 and 2021, the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Agency (ATF, in English) administration received 45,000 homemade firearms recovered in criminal investigations, including 692 murders or attempted murders.

In those five years, according to the same department, the origin of only 0.98% of weapons of this type can be traced.

The rule, approved Monday, was proposed by the Department of Justice nearly a year ago, as part of measures to strengthen gun control that Biden announced at the time.

It was submitted to the public media and had nearly 290,000 comments or contributions.
