With the best mark of his life and a second place finish at the Athletics Meeting in Lausanne, Cuban Lazaro Martinez secured a place in the triple jump final of the 2022 Wanda Diamond League on Friday.

The Guantanamo man, this year’s indoor world champion, made three unprecedented jumps in his career, best of 17.50 meters at the first attempt. It was then stretched to 17.42 and 17.38 metres, all higher than the 17.30 metres he showed as an outdoor peak.

His outstanding performance in the Swiss city was only surpassed by 17.67 meters by fellow Cuban Andy Diaz, who no longer represents the island’s athletics federation.

Jordan Diaz, the Spanish nationalist Cuban, this time monopolized third place with 17.44 metres.

With his performance, Lazaro added seven units to his accumulated tally and now shares with China’s Zhou the fifth and sixth place in the specialty ladder.

After the three registration tests, both will be among the six contenders in the final which will take place in Zurich on September 7-8.

In the women’s triple jump, Venezuelan favorite Yulimar Rojas, the only one over 15 meters (15.31), ruled. She was succeeded by Jamaican Shanica Ricketts (14.64) and Ukrainian Marina Bech-Romanchuk (14.31).

With a competition record, Dutchman Vimke Paul signed her lead, clocking 52.95 seconds in the 400m hurdles, cementing her condition, after winning three titles at the last European Athletics Championships in Munich 2022.

In the same vein, Frasini Niyonsaba from Burundi was the best in the 3000m race with a time of 8:26.80 minutes.

The Norwegian Olympic champion for the Tokyo 2020 Games, Jakob Ingbrigtsen, set a season mark of 3:29.05 minutes in the 1500m; Dominican Marilyde Paulino led the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 48.29 seconds, and Puerto Rican Jasmine Camacho Quinn – also queen in the Japanese capital – won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 12.34 seconds.

This last time was recorded as a meeting record and wipes out 12.40 created by American Gail Devers since July 2002.

The Lausanne meeting was the eleventh leg of the Diamond League. Before the final, the only thing left is to pass through Brussels on September 2 to close out the qualification process for the remaining modalities.

To share the coveted diamonds, the six athletes with the best accumulating field disciplines and eight in the track disciplines will attend Zurich, all without backing up the points accumulated so far.
