UN officials assess the panorama of casualties in Colombia

The purpose of the meeting with the UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict, Pramila Patten, and the Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, Siobhan Muli, was to assess the current situation of victims and to identify contributions that the UN can share in this area.

This space, promoted by the Presidential Council for National Reconciliation through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, helped hear best practices and challenges to prevent sexual violence in conflict.

UN Women considers the detailed work of the entities essential for Colombian women to live free from violence.

“It is important to have a comprehensive legislative framework, but also to address measures and obstacles. We must do a self-assessment to see where the bottlenecks are and make sure measures are addressed appropriately,” Bramela said.

He added that the challenges we face in terms of care and compensation are difficult, not only at the national level, but also at the global level.

He urged, in this sense, to “respond in a humane manner to the survivors, according to the capacities and roles of each entity.”

He congratulated the authorities for their work in this field, and emphasized that the country enjoys the support of the United Nations and UN Women.

The UN Special Representative just shared a space with women victims of sexual violence in the context of armed conflict and representatives of social organizations in northern Colombia, to learn about the challenges and actions needed to prevent and respond to sexual violence in the country.
