WCC calls for Cuba to be removed from list of sponsors of terrorism

Canadian pastor Christopher Ferguson reported that the World Council of Churches on Thursday approved a resolution calling for Cuba to be removed from the US State Department’s questionable list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

It says the initiative was presented by the Presbyterian Church of Cuba, with support from the Presbyterian Church of Colombia, the United States and Canada.

The resolution includes demands for the abolition of international sanctions imposed on Cuba – such as the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States – and Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe, and demands support for the implementation, design and financing of projects for the benefit of the state. Peace in Colombia.

Ferguson noted that the document presented at the eleventh session of this Assembly of Churches, the largest in the world, which speaks with moral and ethical authority in solidarity for peace and justice, affirms that these international sanctions affect human rights and the dignity of cities.

From Germany where the meeting is being held, in remarks via WhatsApp to Prensa Latina, the pastor explained that the decision presented was supported by all and was part of a larger movement against international sanctions.

In other ways, through this initiative, the member churches of the World Council community are invited to reflect and debate within and among their institutions about Christian principles and perspectives regarding the doctrine of nuclear deterrence.

It also urges all States that have not yet done so to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, in particular those under nuclear protection and the nuclear-weapon States that are the source of this global threat.
