Women's Champions League and European Women's Championship in the same year

Women’s Champions League and European Women’s Championship in the same year

The UEFA Women’s Cup took place for the first time in 2001/2002, and two decades later, the UEFA Women’s European Cup 2022 marks the fifth year that female players have had the chance to win major titles for clubs and teams from the continent in the same season.

So far, 12 German women have achieved the feat: five in 2005 and 2009, and two more in 2013. Now, five French women can join them thanks to ceremonial race after race. Lyon won the UEFA Women’s Champions League in Turin. Perhaps particularly important to stop them was Sweden’s Fridolina Rulfo, who was part of the Barcelona squad that Lyon lost in that final.

In the next two seasons, there is a chance to earn more history, as no player has ever won the UEFA Club Final, FIFA Women’s World Cup or Olympic Championship in the same year. Ali Krieger came close to achieving this, winning the European Women’s Cup Final with Frankfurt in 2008, then becoming a substitute for the gold-medal-winning US team at the Olympics in China.

To be considered “double winners”, players must participate in both finals won in the same year.

All five started in the 2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final against Barcelona. Other potential winners include Ada Hegerberg (Norway) and Janis Kayman (Belgium), who came off the bench in Turin. Dutchmen Damaris Igurola and Daniel van de Donk were unused substitutes in the final, while Amandine Henry, Eugenie Le Sommer and Pearl Moroni were not included in the France squad.
