About 11,000 policemen will provide security for a city in Ecuador

Quito, July 11 (Prensa Latina) The President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, confirmed today that before the end of his term he will send about 11,000 police officers to provide security for the city of Guayaquil in the province of Guayas.

During a meeting on Tuesday with the mayor of that port city, Aquiles Alvarez, the president explained that on July 27 a ship will arrive from Turkey with 20 armored vehicles on board, which will patrol that area.

Laso said the cars are the first of 150 that will arrive in the country for use by the armed forces and the national police.

In addition, the Head of State agreed with the Buenos Aires City Council to intervene in the Socio Vivienda complex to expand drinking water and sewage services in this sector, one of the most controversial sectors of the main port.

A survey published by the Citizens’ Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice in Mexico ranked the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil as one of the 50 most violent cities in the world.

According to the document, the city of Guayaquil ranked 24th, thus moving up in relation to the 2021 edition of the same ranking, as the city of the Andean country ranked 50th with 1,537 murders and a total population of 3.2 million.

Experts and citizens are calling on the government to implement comprehensive public policies to reduce violence and insecurity.

During the February 5 sectoral elections, the people of Guayaquil and Guayas leaned towards a different direction than the one that has ruled the city and the province for more than 30 years.
