Conclusion of the Second Congress of Ornamental Plants and Flowers in Guatemala

The second day will focus on practical and technical aspects through field tours, where more than 300 participants will be able to observe begonias, cacti, violets and others, according to the agenda.

The event also includes an exhibition with more than 30 pavilions for value chain suppliers, supplies, transportation and services for these factories.

The previous day, local and international experts spoke on the topics of innovation, marketing, logistics, diversification, opportunities and trends, climate change, sustainability and how the global situation affects the industry.

The head of the Ornamental Plants, Foliage and Flowers Committee of the Guatemalan Exporters Association, José Caparros, said that this country has great advantages that distinguish it from its competitors.

He stressed that trained and specialized human resources, climate and quality allow the production of more than 500 species and three thousand varieties on an area of ​​3,500 hectares with year-round production.

He added that the 10 most in-demand local products are leather leaves, yucca, eucalyptus, dracaena, rose, chamadoria, asparagus, thailandsia, sansevieria, and croton.

Caparos stressed that we are proud of the ornamental industry, as it has been able to maintain steady growth ranging between 8 to 12 percent annually, with exports exceeding $120 million in 2022.

At the end of June 2023, official data from Agexport showed an income for Guatemala of $66 million thanks to the direct and indirect work in the sector of 60,000 people, 75 percent of whom are women in rural areas.
