Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel achieved an intensified agenda in Brussels on Monday in the context of two parallel summits, as he called for a new and more just international order.

After an act of emotional support for the island this Sunday, with the participation of resident Belgian and Cuban backers, the Head of State kicked off Monday with a meeting with the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves.

Diaz-Canel started his day with a meeting with the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves.

The leaders spoke in the context of the start of the third summit of the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the last bloc in which Gonçalves holds the interim presidency.

Close relations unite island states, based on cooperation agreements for many years.

Diaz-Canel also spoke today with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, in a meeting in which they highlighted the importance of implementing the Agreement on Dialogue and Political Cooperation between the European Union and Cuba, signed in 2016.

“The history of the Caribbean nations represented here is marked by centuries of colonialism, slavery, plunder and the current unfair international economic system. Acknowledging this reality will make it easier to understand who we are and what our aspirations are,” he said.

According to Diaz-Canel, the Forum represents an opportunity to advance a high-level political dialogue, which must be translated into concrete actions for the benefit of our peoples.

Late in the afternoon, the expected moment of the dignitary’s presence took place at the Peoples’ Summit, an event of social movements and progressive forces from Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe that meets in parallel with the third EU-CELAC summit.

The president’s arrival in one of the lecture halls of the Free University of Brussels provoked a standing ovation with slogans of support for the largest of the Antilles and condemnation of the blockade imposed by the United States.

In this hard-line space in favor of just causes, Díaz-Canel recalls the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and defends the right of the Caribbean nation to follow its own path.
