Environmentalists in Italy are calling for action to combat drought

The note published on the official website of that environmental group indicates that from 2020 to date, 81 serious damages have occurred, distributed in almost all regions of the country, although the regions of Lombardy, Piedmont and Sicily were the most affected with 15 and 14. And nine in a row.

Next, the regions of Sardinia, Emilia-Romagna and Trentino-Alto Adige were mentioned in that list, with six damages each, as a result of increasingly chronic droughts due to climate change, with serious environmental and economic repercussions.

Given this situation, Legambiente warns that “the need for rapid, concrete and integrated interventions cannot be postponed any longer.”

Among the proposals formulated in that document was the re-establishment of a single address for district authorities, to know availability, real consumption and potential demand and to determine updated water balances.

It is also proposed to adopt an integrated national strategy that promotes the application of new and modern practices and measures to reduce the demand for water and avoid its waste.

Another recommended action is to reduce the consumption and waste of this resource in agricultural uses, with agri-food systems requiring less water and using more efficient irrigation methods.

Legambiente experts noted the need for the regional programming tools of the EU’s new Common Agricultural Policy to be able to guide farmers’ crop choices.

Finally, they argue that it is necessary to restore all those practices that allow maximum water retention in the areas, as well as to “strengthen actions to restore ecological functions and restore ecosystem services in them.”
