New Zealander Dixon won the Toronto IndyCar Grand Prix

New Zealand driver Scott Dixon won the Toronto Grand Prix, the tenth round of the IndyCar season, on Sunday to move into second place with American Mario Andretti on 52 wins.

Dixon, 41, trails only AJ Foyt in IndyCar history with 67 wins.

“It’s unbelievable,” Dixon said of his winning streak.

“It’s huge. I feel so lucky to be a part of this team. Every time these questions come up, I’m so grateful to have AJ and him (Andretti) still in the pit. We see them. We talk to them, it’s really cool. ,” he added.

Andretti, the 82-year-old racing legend who won the 1978 Formula 1 world championship, the 1969 Indianapolis 500 and four IndyCar titles, congratulated Dixon on Twitter.

In Toronto, Dixon defeated American Colton Herda by 0.8106 seconds and beat third-placed Swede Felix Rosnqvist.

Dixon, a six-time IndyCar champion, extended his streak to 18 consecutive seasons with at least one win in a race.

It was his first win since May 2021 at Texas Motor Speedway. He won twice in Toronto in 2013 and 2018.

Spaniard Alex Palo finished sixth and third in the general classification. Mexican Pato O’Ward finished eleventh and Brazil’s Helio Castroneves seventeenth.

The 85-lap, 1,786-mile, 11-turn course on the streets of Exhibition Place returns to the IndyCar schedule after being canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Swedish Marcus Ericsson, winner of the Indianapolis 500, now remains the season leader with 351 points, followed by Australian Will Power (316) and defending champion Spaniard Alex Palo in third with 314.
