The backlash has begun from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers since former President Donald Trump and 18 other defendants were indicted in Fulton County, Georgia, on Monday.

Here is what some of the top lawmakers had to say:

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, both Democrats, said in a joint statement that the indictment “depicts a recurring pattern of criminal activity.”

The latest indictment details how Mr. Trump led a months-long plot to fuel the Great Lie to steal the election, undermine our democracy, and nullify the will of the people of Georgia. “The actions by the Fulton County District Attorney, along with other state and federal prosecutors, reaffirm the shared belief that no one in America, not even the president, is above the law,” the US statement said.

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said President Joe Biden has “armed the government” against Trump.

“Justice should be blind, but Biden has armed the government against his main political opponent to meddle in the 2024 election. Now, a hard-line attorney general in Georgia is following in Biden’s footsteps by attacking President Trump and using him to raise money for his political life. Americans are seeing through this farce. Desperate.” chirp McCarthy.

Republican Congressman Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and a top Trump ally on Capitol Hill, defended Trump in tweet This Monday night.

“Today’s impeachment is just the latest political attack in the Democrats’ hunt for President Trump. He did nothing wrong,” Jordan wrote on Twitter.

House Republican Convention Chair Elise Stefanik criticized the allegations moments after they were debunked.

“This is another far-left lawyer who uses her office as a weapon to attack Joe Biden’s main political opponent, President Trump,” Stefanik said. “This blatant election interference by the far left will not work, and President Trump will defeat these trumped-up charges and take back the White House in 2024.”
