US lawmakers consider calling Trump to testify

WASHINGTON, July 15 (Princea Latina) US lawmakers on the House Special Committee investigating the Capitol attack today are analyzing the possibility of calling former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) and Vice President Mike Pence to testify.

After seven public hearings about the events of January 6, 2021 and the Republican billionaire’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, Representative Adam Kinzinger told the Wall Street Journal that the committee is evaluating whether to issue subpoenas for both.

Last April, Democrat Benny Thompson, the chair of the inquiry, said Pence’s testimony might not be necessary given information gathered from other sources, but this week he said they were considering an interview with him and Trump.

In a House hearing, members of Congress explained how the former White House chief tried to pressure Pence to cancel the 2020 election and linked the campaign to pressure the second in the government to lead the violent events during the assault. at Congress House.

The eighth and final hearing so far is scheduled for Tuesday, July 21, as they seek to establish Trump’s responsibility for the attack on Capitol Hill, considered the worst attack on democracy in the United States, with five dead and more than 140 police officers injured.

While the commission cannot bring legal charges against the former president, its central task was to reveal the full extent of his attempt to halt the transfer of power and to link his efforts to violence that day.

Ultimately, the Department of Justice should be the one to decide whether to pursue criminal charges.
