They will form a committee in Chile to check the constitutional process

SANTIAGO DE CHILE, Oct. 29 (Prensa Latina) After several days of negotiations, the Chilean political parties represented in Congress agreed this week to create a special commission to verify compliance with the foundations of the future constitution.

Senate President Alvaro Elizalde said this ad hoc body would not be made up of representatives from Congress, the Supreme Court or the Constitutional Court.

The government’s Recognition of Dignity coalition called for a judicial arbitrator such as the Supreme Court to oversee the process, while the right-wing opposition favored parliament, but both blocs gave up their positions to reach consensus.

The head of the Democratic Revolution, Senator Juan Ignacio Latorre, of the ruling bloc, said that the spirit of this political negotiating table should be that all parties surrender to reach an agreement as transversal as possible.

It will receive proposals next week regarding the formation of the Special Committee and the method for its appointment.

Talks between the parties represented in Congress to move toward a new constitution began after the September 4 referendum, when a Magna Carta proposal put forward by a joint conference was rejected with 62 percent of the vote.

But the process is moving slowly and the body responsible for drafting the text of the new Basic Law to replace the one in force since the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) has not yet been identified.

The left-wing seats in the Coalition Government and Christian Democracy are championed by a 100 percent elected body, comprising 134 deputies, with seats reserved for indigenous peoples and independent participation, and a term of office of six months.
